Location

The Paço dos Alcaides is located within the fortified complex of Montemor-o-Novo Castle, in the area known as Moinho do Bispo. Its elevated position in the locality offers a wide perspective of the surrounding Alentejo landscape, marking its presence on the town's horizon.

A Millennial History

The history of this site dates back to a distant past, with evidence of occupation since Prehistory and Late Antiquity. During the Islamic period, Montemor-o-Novo was a fortified settlement of strategic importance. The Paço dos Alcaides, or alcazaba, was erected at the beginning of the 13th century, after the reconquest of the territory, establishing itself as a center of power and defense. This palace occupies the same space where the main nucleus of the original Islamic fortification is believed to have existed.

Architecture and Marks of Time

Currently in ruins, the Paço dos Alcaides still allows a glimpse of the imposing nature of its structure. It is characterized by its rectangular plan and the protection of two round towers, elements that emphasize its defensive function. In the 15th century, the palace underwent significant renovations, which introduced notable decorative elements in Mudéjar style, enriching the architectural ensemble with the influence of Islamic techniques and patterns, a result of the cultural fusion present in the Iberian Peninsula.

Archaeological Revelations

Excavations carried out at the Paço dos Alcaides have brought to light important testimonies of daily life from other times. Silos and various archaeological materials have been discovered, especially from the Almohad period, evidencing the Islamic presence on the site. Among the findings are ceramic fragments, coins, and ornaments, as well as bone objects related to spinning activity, which offer a window into the practices and daily life of the ancient inhabitants of this historic palace.
