A Hermitage with History

This modest hermitage, also known as the Hermitage of São Fausto and, later, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of Remedies), originated in the first half of the 17th century. Its construction reflects the popular religious architecture of the time, maintaining a character of simplicity and devotion.

Originally dedicated to Saint Faustus, a martyr of the great Roman persecutions, the hermitage would later be consecrated to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in the 18th century. This change of invocation over time illustrates the evolution of faith and religious practices in the region.

Architectural and Artistic Details

The hermitage features a longitudinal plan, with a nave preceding a narrower and slightly lower chancel, to which a sacristy is adjoined. The main gable facade is marked by a straight lintel portal, complemented by a frieze and a cornice, details that emphasize its unostentatious facade.

Inside, the chancel is the most interesting point, covered by a ribbed vault. Its walls are adorned with regional-style mural paintings, which tell a visual story adapted to the space. In contrast to the chancel, the nave features an exposed wooden roof structure, lending a touch of rustic authenticity to the ensemble.
