The Environmental Interpretation Center is located in Monte da Bica, in the heart of the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo. It is housed in an old primary school, a building that harmoniously blends into the typical rural landscape of Alentejo. Its location is strategic, being close to the area where the important Cabrela and Monfurado Sites converge. This place offers a serene and rustic environment, inviting immersion in nature. Outside, there is a picnic park, ideal for a moment of pause.
This space was created to be a starting point for understanding the region's natural richness. The Center's main objective is to provide detailed information about the Cabrela and Monfurado Sites, areas of community importance that are part of the Natura 2000 Network. Here, visitors can deepen their knowledge of the habitats, flora, and various animal species that inhabit this landscape, contributing to the appreciation and conservation of Alentejo's biodiversity.
The Cabrela and Monfurado Sites represent areas of high ecological value and are characteristic of the Alentejo landscape. Vast cork oak and holm oak woodlands, crucial ecosystems for local biodiversity, predominate here. These plant formations, along with well-preserved Mediterranean scrublands and riparian galleries, host a remarkable variety of species. The Monfurado Site, in particular, stands out for its importance in the conservation of various bat species, both for reproduction and hibernation, highlighting its relevance to fauna.
The Center is not only an information point but also a strategic starting point for exploring the natural surroundings. From here, it is possible to access various well-marked walking and mountain biking trails, which allow for active discovery of the landscape. These trails cross woodlands and transition zones between different types of vegetation, providing an immersive contact with nature and rural heritage, contributing to a full experience in harmony with the environment.
