The headstone is located on the front of the Chafariz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Fountain of Our Lady of the Conception), in the small square of the Town Hall in Montemor-o-Novo, in the parish of Nossa Senhora do Bispo.

Dimensions and Material

It is a small altarpiece made of white Estremoz marble, approximately 70x40 cm.

Historical Inscription

The inscription, dated 1646, is a tribute from King D. João IV to the Virgin of the Conception, marking her elevation to Patroness of Portugal after the Restoration of Independence.

Inscription Content

The Latin inscription evokes Marian devotion and the dedication of the kingdom to Our Lady of the Conception, celebrating the Virgin's protection over the kingdom.

Historical Context

The headstone was placed on the fountain in the year 1646, during the reign of D. João IV, as part of a public act of devotion and gratitude to the Virgin Mary.
