Historical Legacy

The church we see today stands on an even older foundation, with records of its existence dating back to 1536. Throughout the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, the building acquired the form and elements that characterize its current architecture, reflecting different moments in local history.

The Singularity of the Portico

One of the most remarkable elements of this church is its entrance portico. Executed in marble with a combination of two tones, it features lines in the Mannerist style, with an influence that refers to Serlio's ideas. This galilee, due to its grandeur and detail, stands out in the religious architecture of the region and is attributed to the architect Diogo de Torralva.

Artistic Richness Inside

Upon entering, one discovers an interior where art manifests in various forms. The nave walls are almost entirely covered by a notable set of 17th-century tiles. These tiles, with varied patterns, also include friezes decorated with singular figures such as winged mermaids holding crowns, grotesques, cherubs, and even representations of exotic birds and a monkey, showcasing the creativity of the era. This extensive azulejaria (tilework), of Lisbon manufacture, is complemented by the gilded carving of the altars, including a Rococo altarpiece on the main altar, the stuccoes on the vaults, and the mural paintings, creating a visually rich and harmonious environment.

Classified Heritage

Recognizing its historical and artistic value, the Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça do Divor was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2014, which underscores its importance in the cultural heritage of the region.
