The Rural Museum of Casa do Povo de Santa Maria is located in Estremoz, in the urban area of Santo André. It is housed in the building of the Dr. José Lourenço Marques Crespo Cultural and Associative Centre, a structure that hosts various local activities and is integrated into the city's daily life.
This museum has its roots in the initiative of Casa do Povo de Santa Maria, having been founded in 1951. Its creation responded to the need to collect, preserve, and present objects and testimonies linked to rural life and the traditions of the rural community in the Estremoz region, reflecting local identity and history.
The museum's collection consists of various pieces illustrating the daily life, trades, and customs of the Alentejo rural environment. Particular emphasis in the permanent exhibition is given to Estremoz ceramics, a folk art with a strong tradition in the city and which constitutes a fundamental cultural element of the area.
Throughout its existence, the museum has occupied several premises, having begun its activities in rooms provided in the former Convent of the Maltesas. This history of change culminated in its permanent location at the current Cultural Centre, a journey that reflects the institution's adaptation and continuity within the social and cultural fabric of Estremoz.
