The Redondo Wine Museum is located in the Alentejo town of Redondo, specifically in the António Festas neighbourhood. This location allows visitors to explore the town's urban environment, situated within the eponymous municipality, in the heart of Alentejo. The surrounding area is characterized by its peacefulness and proximity to the town centre, facilitating an integrated experience within the community.
Inaugurated in September 2001, this space was conceived as a starting point for understanding the vitivinicultural essence of Alentejo. It serves as a cultural dissemination centre, dedicated to the heritage of wine in the Redondo region. It allows for an immersion into the long tradition linking this area to wine production, revealing its historical and cultural importance.
The museum's permanent collection offers a panorama of the art of wine, exhibiting a wide range of agricultural instruments, various objects, images, and documents that illustrate its production. There is a particular focus on ceramics, a material intimately linked to Redondo's identity as a production centre. The arrangement of the elements guides visitors through the different phases of viticulture, from work in the vineyard to the moment of serving the wine. Additionally, the museum presents temporary exhibitions and initiatives that delve deeper into themes related to the sector. A multimedia kiosk is also available, offering detailed information about the museum and the vitivinicultural activities of the area.
One of the most unique aspects present in the museum is its approach to amphora wine, a millennial winemaking practice. This technique, dating back to the Roman period, involves fermenting wine in large clay pots. The tradition has been preserved in Alentejo over generations and is currently being rediscovered. The museum displays examples of these amphorae, testaments to time. Visitors can learn about the historical descriptions by António Augusto Aguiar, from the 19th century, who praised the forms and capacity of these amphorae to maintain the wine's freshness, likening them to underground cellars. Amphora wine stands out for its production without resorting to modern technology, resulting in a unique flavour profile, with notes of clay, laurel pitch, and spicy touches. This section offers a deep understanding of how this millennial heritage continues to shape the regional vitivinicultural landscape.
