The Legacy of Apeles Coelho:

This museum space is a tribute to Apeles Coelho, an artisan born in Vila Viçosa in 1928. His story is intimately linked to that of the town, particularly as the father of the renowned poet Florbela Espanca was his godfather. Apeles Coelho began his professional journey in locksmithing and blacksmithing, trades he learned in a local workshop. However, due to health reasons, his professional path took a new direction, leading him to dedicate himself to a new type of manual work.

It was through the encouragement to restore ancient pieces that Apeles Coelho discovered his calling for pewter. He then began to dedicate himself to creating replicas of original 16th and 17th-century artifacts, developing unique skill and knowledge in this art.

Mastery in Pewter:

Over the years, Apeles Coelho earned a remarkable reputation in the manufacture of pewter objects. His work stood out for its quality and meticulous finishes, qualities that earned him several national and international awards. His personal collection, now exhibited in the museum, is recognized as one of the most extensive in Europe, testifying to his dedication and perfection.

In addition to his artistic production, Apeles Coelho passed on his knowledge to many young people, some of whom would go on to create their own workshops, thus perpetuating this art. The Pewter Museum displays his vast collection, allowing the public to appreciate not only the elaborate pieces but also some of the materials and tools the master used in his daily work.
