Location

The Évora Museum is located in the heart of the city's historic centre. It is housed in a building with history, the former Archbishop's Palace, whose origins date back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This central location makes it easily accessible for those exploring Évora's most emblematic streets and squares on foot, situated in Largo do Conde de Vila Flor.

Origin and History

The history of the Évora Museum has deep roots, linked to the figure of Friar Manuel do Cenáculo, who in the early 19th century was already assembling significant collections. Officially, the museum was established in 1915. Its collection grew considerably with the integration of artistic assets from extinct convents and religious houses, as well as through private donations. Installed in its current building from the 1920s, the museum underwent an important reorganization in the following decades, structuring its collections to present a comprehensive overview of local and regional art and history.

The Treasures Preserved

The museum houses a diverse collection, with particular emphasis on its painting, sculpture, and archaeology collections.

Particularly notable is the core collection of painting, which spans a vast period from the 15th to the 20th century, and includes works by Portuguese and foreign artists. Significant pieces from churches and convents in the region can be admired, highlighting, for example, important altarpieces.

The archaeology section is equally relevant, presenting finds that tell the long history of human occupation in the region, from prehistory, with notable artifacts such as those associated with the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro, to later periods.

Other collections include sculpture, with pieces from different eras and styles, religious goldsmithery, furniture illustrating the evolution of decorative arts, and other objects that complement the cultural and historical panorama, such as naturalia and scientific objects.

A Glimpse into History and Art

Visiting the Évora Museum is a way to deepen knowledge about the city and the Alentejo region. The collections serve as windows into the past, allowing one to understand the artistic richness, social evolution, and history that have shaped this area over the centuries. It is an essential point for anyone seeking to connect with the heritage and cultural identity of the place.
