The Montemor Bullring is located in Montemor-o-Novo, specifically in the area covering the former parishes of Nossa Senhora da Vila, Nossa Senhora do Bispo, and Silveiras. This site, also known as Praça do Rossio, is integrated into the city's urban fabric, standing out as a visible landmark in the heart of the town.
Inaugurated on August 6, 1882, the Montemor Bullring is a building with a rich history, reflecting the city's deep connection to bullfighting. In the early 20th century, in 1910, the venue underwent restoration works. Interestingly, this space was not limited to its primary function, also serving as a film projection venue until the mid-20th century, specifically until 1954, demonstrating its versatility and importance in the community's social life over time.
Montemor-o-Novo possesses an ancient and strong tradition linked to bullfighting, dating back to the 15th century, when bullfights were already held in other venues in the town. This bullring is a symbol of that heritage, manifested in the history of prominent cavaleiros (mounted bullfighters) local, such as Simão da Veiga Júnior and Luís Miguel da Veiga, whose careers carried Montemor's name beyond borders. The city is also the birthplace of important ganadarias (fighting bull ranches). Furthermore, it hosts one of the oldest and most prestigious forcados groups in Portugal, the Grupo de Forcados Amadores de Montemor, founded in 1939, underscoring the vitality of this cultural practice in the region.
Classified as a 2nd category bullring, the Montemor Bullring features architecture that evokes a classic style. The venue, which has a capacity of approximately 2000 seats, belongs to the Misericórdia de Montemor-o-Novo. It is important for visitors to know that, at present, the space awaits necessary structural interventions to ensure spectator safety, these conditions being essential for the realization of future bullfighting shows at the location.
