The Parish Church of São João Baptista is located in the São Pedro neighborhood, in the town of Montemor-o-Novo. Rising on a hill at approximately 300 meters above sea level, the church is situated within the limits of the old town walls, offering a dominant perspective over the town, which extends to the north, and over the Almansor River, which meanders nearby.

A Secular Legacy

This temple has its origins in the 14th century, quickly assuming significant importance in local religious life. As early as 1302, the church was donated to the Cathedral Chapter, a milestone that underscores its role as a parish seat and its historical relevance in the context of Montemor-o-Novo and the region. Throughout the centuries, the building has witnessed and been part of the town's evolution.

Architectural Features

The architecture of the Church of São João Baptista reflects the Gothic style that marked the era of its construction. Its plan is rectangular, composed of a main nave and a square-sectioned chancel, both with pitched roofs. In its interior, the nave stands out for its wooden ceiling, a common solution in Alentejo Gothic architecture, while the chancel is distinguished by its ribbed vault, or cross vault, lending the space a remarkable structural and aesthetic uniqueness.
