Located in the vicinity of Monsaraz, in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, in the district of Évora, the Alqueva Dark Sky Observatory (OLA) benefits from a singular position in the heart of Alentejo. This location offers unobstructed views of the immensity of the Alqueva Lake and the surrounding Alentejo landscape, creating a natural setting of rare beauty. Its implantation was carefully chosen to maximize sky observation conditions.
OLA is situated within a vast area protected from light pollution, internationally recognized as the world's first Dark Sky® Reserve. This certification, covering an area of approximately 3,000 to 3,300 km², ensures exceptional night sky quality, making it one of the best spots in Europe for astronomical observation. It is here that the darkness of the sky reveals its true splendor, allowing for the clear and impressive visibility of countless celestial bodies.
Visitors can dive into the immensity of the universe through guided observation sessions, conducted by experts in astronomy and astrophysics. Using high-resolution telescopes, it is possible to contemplate planets, constellations, star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies. In addition to nocturnal observations, the observatory also offers the opportunity to observe the Sun, a fascinating star, and to participate in virtual cosmic navigation experiences, ensuring a journey through the universe even on cloudy days. Sessions are conducted in Portuguese and English.
At OLA, the visit goes beyond simple contemplation. It is a space dedicated to scientific outreach, where one learns about celestial phenomena and the cycles that govern our solar system, such as solar activity. The guides help to unravel fundamental concepts of astronomy, teaching how to identify constellations and navigate the firmament. Each month, the sky presents new surprises, with different celestial objects coming into prominence, ensuring an always dynamic and enriching experience for all who seek to explore astronomical knowledge.
