The São Bento Chapel Viewpoint is located in the Telheiro area, in the village of Monsaraz, part of the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. Situated on an elevated point, approximately five hundred meters from the village center, this spot offers a privileged perspective of the surrounding area. From here, the gaze reaches the historic citadel of Monsaraz and extends across the vast Alentejo plains that unfold on the horizon.
This viewpoint is associated with the São Bento Chapel, a rural chapel of sober and simple lines. Its construction dates back to the late 16th century, a result of contributions from the inhabitants of the village's surroundings. Throughout the centuries, the building faced challenges, having been damaged, for instance, in the 1755 earthquake. Currently, the chapel shows the signs of time, but it is still possible to observe its original structure, composed of a single nave, a chancel, and an adjacent sacristy. Inside, there are vestiges of Baroque-style elements.
The São Bento Chapel Viewpoint is a popular visiting spot in Monsaraz, especially for the expansive view it offers. It is a place that invites the observation of the landscape and the contemplation of the colors and light of the Alentejo. Many visitors choose this spot to appreciate the twilight, when the sky's hues blend with the silhouette of the village and the plains, creating a suitable setting for photographic records.
