The Church of Nossa Senhora da Lagoa is located in the heart of the medieval village of Monsaraz, in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. The temple is situated in Praça D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, a central location that makes it a striking visual landmark when traversing the streets of the walled village. Its position offers a privileged vantage point over the historical and serene atmosphere of Monsaraz.
The history of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Lagoa dates back to an original temple from the 13th century. However, the church visited today was erected in the 16th century, replacing the previous construction, which became insufficient for the needs of the time, particularly during the Black Death, allowing for the burial of a greater number of people. Over the centuries, the building underwent various interventions and adaptations, including reconstructions after events such as the 1755 earthquake, which contributed to its current physiognomy.
The building displays a combination of architectural elements that reflect its evolution over time. With a longitudinal plan, the church is composed of three naves and a main chapel, preceded by an endonarthex. The main facade is distinguished by its three panels and two registers, topped by a cut-out pediment, and a bell tower that rises on the right. Although predominantly Renaissance in style, it is possible to identify Gothic features, such as the ogival apse, and constructive sobriety with the use of stone, slate, and the traditional white lime on the walls.
Inside, the space invites contemplation. The organization of the three naves, divided by columns, and the simplicity of their decoration provide an atmosphere of introspection. One of the most prominent elements is the marble tomb chest, dating from the 14th century, believed to belong to Gomes Martins Silvestre. The main face of this chest displays an elaborate funeral procession, an artistic and historical testament of great value, offering a window into the memory and faith of the Monsaraz community.
