The Cisterna de Monsaraz is located in the heart of the Village of Monsaraz, in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. Its position is easily recognizable, situated on Travessa da Cisterna and near Porta do Buraco (Hole Gate), one of the old accesses to the wall. Being integrated into the urban fabric of the village, its discovery becomes an integral part of a walk through its historic streets.
This imposing cistern, of medieval origin and dating back to the 14th century, is a remarkable example of the architecture and engineering of its time. Its primary function was vital for the community: collecting and storing rainwater, serving as the central reservoir that ensured the water supply for the inhabitants of Monsaraz for many centuries. Its relevance lasted until the mid-20th century, around 1950, when the arrival of the public water supply system changed its main purpose. From then on, the cistern was mainly used for domestic irrigation, but it remains a valuable architectural testament to water management in the past.
In addition to the underground structure of the cistern, there is an adjacent terrace that offers an interesting perspective on the site and its surroundings. This space was, in times, a point of conviviality and celebration in the village's life. There are records that, during the 60s and 70s, the Cistern's terrace was the stage for dances and parties enlivened by the first bands playing genres like rock, jazz, and blues. This facet of the location adds a layer of social and cultural memory to its history.
It is important to know that access to both the interior of the Cistern, when available for visits, and the upper terrace is via stairs. Currently, there are no infrastructures, such as platforms or supports, to facilitate entry or circulation for people with reduced mobility, such as wheelchair users.
