The Mata Nacional do Cabeção (Cabeção National Forest) is an area that has belonged to the Order of Avis since 1574. In 1578, King D. Sebastião granted the people the right to use the pine forest.
The forest has over 258 hectares and is part of the Natura 2000 network, an initiative to protect natural habitats. It is divided into two nuclei: Mata de Cima (Upper Forest) and Mata de Baixo (Lower Forest).
The most common species is the umbrella pine, which occupies 71% of the area. There are also cork oaks and eucalyptus trees. This space is ideal for hiking and nature observation.
The forest is home to various species of birds, including herons, white storks, and black storks. There are also several birds of prey. It is a great place for birdwatching enthusiasts.
The site offers opportunities for recreational activities such as hiking, picnics, and nature walks. There is a picnic area and a maintenance circuit for visitors.
The forest is managed by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF). It is a research area on cork oak cultivation and has a partial hunting reserve for rabbits and partridges.
The Mata Nacional do Cabeção is located near the village of Cabeção, and is easily accessible via a national road.
