The Quinta do Arcediago Fountain is located in an area further away from the historic center of Évora, within the zone known as Malagueira and Horta das Figueiras. It is situated in a rural setting, near the imposing Aqueduto da Prata (Silver Aqueduct), surrounded by landscapes dotted with olive and cork trees, typical of the Alentejo region.
This fountain dates back to the second half of the 16th century, having been built as an essential part of the city's water supply system, closely linked to the Aqueduto da Prata. Its original function was that of a dipping well, allowing direct access to water for collection. Over the centuries, it maintained its relevance, undergoing repairs in the late 19th century, at the initiative of the Viscount of Esperança.
The fountain's construction reveals Mannerist architecture, designed for its hydraulic function. It features a quadrangular plan and a compact, robust form. The main facade is notable for its perfect round access arch, flanked by pilasters and reinforced by thick diagonal buttresses. The structure is crowned by a dome that culminates in a small lantern at the top. Inside, one can observe the original masonry, the remnants of the side benches, and the arch protecting the water source.
A striking detail on the fountain's facade is the presence of a carved stone cartouche above the entrance arch. This contains a Latin inscription that invites reflection. The message reads: "FLECTE GENU; ENSIGNUM, PER QUID VIS VICTA TIRANI / ANTIQUI: AT Que. EREBI CONCIDIT IMPERIUM HOC TU SIVE PIUS FRONTEM, SIVE PECTORA SIGNE / NEC LEMURUM INSIDIAS, SPETRAQUE VANA TIME." This text suggests a connection to the beliefs and values of the time, possibly related to divine protection against evil or adversity.
