The Church of Our Lady of Light is located in the town of Luz, within the municipality of Mourão, in the district of Évora. This temple is situated in the newest part of the village, rebuilt after the old village was submerged by the waters of the vast Alqueva reservoir. Its central position in the new Luz symbolizes the resilience and continuity of a community that reinvented itself, maintaining its Alentejo roots and devotions.
Built in 2003, the Church of Our Lady of Light is a testament to a community's ability to preserve its identity in the face of profound transformations. This contemporary building was designed to evoke the essence of the original temple, which now rests beneath the waters of the Alqueva reservoir, a short distance from its original location. Its architectural design aimed to recreate the environment and atmosphere of the old church, establishing a continuous bridge between the past and present of Luz.
Inside the Church of Our Lady of Light, visitors can observe elements that were carefully reproduced to preserve the memory and artistic legacy of the original temple. Items such as the pulpit and the baptismal font, along with its portals and capitals, were designed as faithful recreations of details that comprised the old church. This approach has allowed the art and devotion of the past to continue to mark and adorn this space of worship and reflection, perpetuating the connection to its history and its ancestors.
