The Church of Saint Sebastian is situated in the locality of Lavre, in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo. It is located in the area of Rua da Casa do Povo, integrated into the village environment.
This chapel marks a reference point in the area, easily identifiable by its traditional appearance and its position within the local urban fabric.
The building features a simple religious structure, with a rectangular main nave. A distinctive element is the chancel, which stands out due to its circular shape at the rear.
Inside, the nave is covered by a barrel vault, while the chancel is topped by a dome, an architectural solution that lends a sense of elevation to this part of the building. The main facade, with straight lines, is crowned by a small bell-gable, a characteristic detail of many religious constructions in the region.
The origin of this place of worship dates back to the 17th century. The church that previously stood here, dedicated to Saint Peter, was in ruins, and its reconstruction was then decided, becoming dedicated to Saint Sebastian.
The works began but were suspended due to lack of resources. Later, at the end of the 17th century, the works were resumed and the construction was able to be completed, taking on the more modest form that endures to this day. Over time, the interior underwent some interventions, such as the renovation of the high altar, to maintain its religious function.
