The Freixeirinha Dam is located in the rural area of the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, near the locality of Pedrogão. It is built over the course of the stream with the same name, the Freixeirinha stream, thus being part of a typically Alentejo environment.

Characteristics of the Structure

This dam is an example of embankment construction, essentially using earth and natural materials in its structure. Its construction represents an engineering feat of remarkable dimensions for its location.

With a height of 37 meters above the foundation and a crest length of 356 meters, the Freixeirinha Dam stands out in the landscape. Its construction was completed in 1995, becoming operational in that year.

The Reservoir and the Landscape

The presence of the dam led to the creation of a significant body of water, the Freixeirinha reservoir. This water reserve has a total capacity of 6.7 million cubic meters.

This body of water transforms the surrounding landscape, offering wide views and modifying the local ecosystem. The reservoir's primary function is to store water for irrigation, playing an important role in the region's agriculture.
