The Misericórdia Church is located in the historic town of Juromenha, an integral part of the municipality of Alandroal, in Alentejo. Juromenha is a village with a strong defensive character and an atmosphere that harks back to bygone eras, situated on an elevated position overlooking the surrounding landscape. The church is integrated into the urban fabric of this locality, reflecting its long history and the importance of the Misericórdia institution within the community.

A Complex with Two Eras

What is today designated as the Misericórdia Church in Juromenha is, in fact, a peculiar architectural complex composed of two churches that developed side by side. The oldest of these structures dates back to the 16th century, retaining the original characteristics of its design. The second church, built in a later period, dates from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, adding a new layer to the history and style of the complex.

Artistic Richness and Architectural Details

The oldest church in the complex, with a single nave, stands out for its ribbed vaults, where the Cross of Christ can be seen at the central point. Over time, other decorative elements have been added, enriching its interior. The more recent church, on its main facade, displays the coats of arms of D. João V, indicative of its chronology and patronage. Inside, noteworthy features include a gilded carved altarpiece, two additional altars, a high choir, and a marble pulpit, all contributing to its remarkable artistic expression.

Legacy and Community Presence

In addition to the spaces of worship, the Misericórdia complex includes the former buildings of the Hospital and the Asylum, which bear witness to the social and community support role played by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia throughout the centuries. This historic complex is complemented by a marble backrest fountain, dated 1872, which stands in front, adding another element of interest and memory to the site.
