The Garden of Shells (Jardim das Conchas) is located in Alcáçovas, a village in the municipality of Viana do Alentejo. This space is part of the architectural complex of Paço dos Henriques, a local historical landmark. Its position within the village makes it accessible and an integral part of Alcáçovas' urban environment.
Locally known as "Chapel and Garden of the Little Shells" (Capela e Jardim das Conchinhas), this singular example of Alentejo's cultural diversity dates back to the 17th century. The chapel, initially dedicated to Saint Jerome, was rebuilt and consecrated to Our Lady of Conception in 1680. Both the chapel and the garden were conceived as part of a walled orchard, maintaining to this day a strong link with the past and with the Paço dos Henriques that houses them.
The most striking element of the Garden of Shells and its chapel is the remarkable decorative technique of embrechados. This art, popular in Portuguese gardens from the 17th century onwards, consists of the inlaying of shells, pebbles, and faience fragments onto surfaces. Inside the chapel, the art reaches an impressive level of detail, completely covering the walls. The exterior facade, the sacristy, a fountain, and the garden walls also display this technique, with approximately 26 different species of shells creating intricate geometric patterns.
Water plays a fundamental role in the garden's conception, giving it an unusual maritime image in the heart of Alentejo. An ingenious hydraulic system ensured the continuous flow of water, which originated from a well and followed an aqueduct to a tank. This water circuit adds a sense of intimacy and movement, complementing the visual richness of the embrechados and highlighting the engineering of the era.
Beyond the exuberance of the embrechados, the garden invites tranquil exploration. It is punctuated by natural elements such as olive trees, lemon trees, and orange trees, which underscore the connection between art and the rural environment. Among its nooks, it's possible to discover curious details, such as the figure of a knight next to an arched column or an inclined structure that lends it a distinctive touch. The Garden of Shells offers a serene ambiance and a singular visual experience.
