The Parish Church of São Bento de Ana Loura is located in the small village of the same name, Ana Loura, an integral part of the municipality of Estremoz. Situated in a predominantly rural area, the church blends into the typical Alentejo landscape, marked by the tranquility and simplicity that characterize these parts. Its presence marks a community landmark in this serene environment.
Although the exact date of its foundation is not recorded, the Church of São Bento de Ana Loura already appeared in historical documents in the year 1534, at which time it already had a parish priest. Throughout the following centuries, and particularly from the 17th century onwards, the building underwent several alterations and extensions. These interventions shaped its physiognomy, adapting it to the needs and architectural styles that succeeded one another.
Its architecture reflects a rural uniqueness, marked by simplicity. The chancel stands out, which, according to the opinion of some specialists, may have preserved its initial structure from the early years of the 16th century. The typology of this part of the temple differs from the rest of the church's body, namely by the absence of trilobate eaves and the presence of gargoyles that exhibit a clearly Renaissance aesthetic. These characteristics suggest a history of phased construction and adaptations over time.
On the exterior, the church's facade features a triangular gable, and its bell tower, with its respective pediment, is adorned with pilasters. The main portal, in marble, stands out for its sobriety and straight jambs. A detail of particular interest is the sundial, also in marble, located on the building's eastern eaves. Dating from the late 18th century, this element adds a touch of history and charm to the facade.
The interior atmosphere of the church maintains the same line of simplicity observed on the exterior, a common feature of many rural churches and hermitages in the Alentejo region. This space invites contemplation and allows for an authentic experience of local religious tradition, in an unadorned and genuine setting.
