This church is a beautiful example of Gothic and Manueline religious architecture, with distinctive elements dating back to the early 16th century.
Originally a hermitage, the church was later converted into a parish church.
Surprisingly, the church houses high-quality mural paintings. Despite being damaged, the paintings on the chancel wall are remarkable for their pictorial quality and the influence of Renaissance grammar. They feature background architectures, partitions simulating pilasters decorated with garlands, and an exemplary perspective play.
The vestiges of the mural paintings in the nave are also impressive, exhibiting a rigorous anatomical care and elegance of design similar to those of the chancel.
Visiting the Parish Church of Santo Aleixo is like taking a trip back in time, exploring the richness of 16th-century religious architecture and art in Portugal.
This church is an integral part of the rich cultural heritage of the Montemor-o-Novo region, well worth a visit to appreciate its beauty and historical significance.
