Situated in the tranquil locality of Amieira, in the municipality of Portel, the Parish Church of Amieira is located in a serene area of the village, known as the Calva. This location invites the discovery of the heritage and the characteristic tranquility of Alentejo. Its presence is a landmark in the local urban landscape, offering a point of interest for those exploring the region.
The Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves is a testament to the historical and architectural evolution of Amieira. The building combines elements of the Manueline and Baroque styles, showcasing the various phases of its construction and transformation. From the primitive structure, the chancel and the lateral elevations of the nave still survive today, preserving the memory of its foundation.
The church observed today is the result of a significant reconstruction initiated in 1534. At that time, the original church was demolished due to its state of ruin, by order of Cardinal Infante Dom Afonso, then bishop of Évora. This decision led to the construction of a new temple, which would become a central element in the life of the community and a symbol of its resilience throughout the centuries.
Upon entering the church, visitors can appreciate the main nave and the chancel, both with their impressive vaulted ceilings. This architectural feature contributes to a sense of spaciousness and elevation within the interior.
The atmosphere inside the temple reflects the sobriety and beauty characteristic of Alentejo religious buildings. It is a place that invites detailed observation of its elements, providing an experience of contemplation and connection with the history and faith that have shaped this heritage throughout time.
