The Church of São Lourenço stands in Largo da Igreja, in the centre of Alqueva village, within the municipality of Portel. Surrounded by traditional houses with whitewashed facades and blue-toned elements, it is integrated into a small churchyard paved with Portuguese cobblestones.
Around it is a tranquil square, where rustic houses and some trees create a serene atmosphere, inviting one to pause and contemplate the Alentejo landscape that stretches beyond the church walls.
Although the original temple probably dated back to the 13th century, no trace of that primitive construction remains. Its current configuration is the result of an extensive reconstruction program initiated in the 18th century and extended until the beginning of the 19th century.
Historical records already mention the existence of the church of “S. Laurentii de Alqueva” in documents from 1262, which highlights the importance of this place of worship for populations scattered across rural estates during the medieval period.
The exterior features the characteristic design of Alentejo churches, with a simple facade, highlighted by quoins and a blue base, and a bell tower marked by arches and a clock at the top.
Inside, the Latin cross plan is organized into a central nave flanked by collateral chapels and blind arches. The barrel vault ceiling spans the entire space, giving amplitude to the ensemble, while the chancel stands out for its depth and the light entering through the small side windows.
The churchyard, paved with Portuguese cobblestones, serves as an informal meeting point where local inhabitants gather and converse. The proximity to the shores of the Alqueva reservoir adds a unique landscape character, visible in the village's nooks.
On a stroll through the area, it's worth noting the details of the indigo blue painting, so typical of the region, and the harmony between the religious building and the robust Alentejo houses, creating an experience of tranquility and authenticity.
