The Mother Church of Saint Anthony stands in Praça da Liberdade (Liberty Square), in the heart of the Doutor José Rosa Sereto Neighborhood, in Reguengos de Monsaraz. Its central and visible location makes it a notable landmark in the urban fabric of the locality, offering an imposing presence in its surroundings.
The history of the Mother Church of Saint Anthony dates back to 1887, the year the Reguengos Parish Council decided to build a new temple. The objective was to construct a church closer to the newly created Town Hall, thus seeking to accommodate a greater number of faithful. The project was entrusted to the renowned architect António José Dias da Silva, also known for designing the Campo Pequeno Bullring in Lisbon. The cornerstone of this building was laid on October 27, 1887, and its inauguration took place on August 25, 1912.
This new building replaced an old hermitage dedicated to Saint Anthony, maintaining the devotion to the same patron saint. The construction benefited from a testamentary legacy that allocated funds for this purpose.
The design of the Mother Church of Saint Anthony reflects a striking romantic spirit, inspired by Gothic-Manueline aesthetics, resulting in one of the most notable examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Portugal. Its plan is a Latin cross, with the bell tower positioned at the center of the main facade, giving it remarkable symmetry.
On the exterior, the robust flying buttresses stand out, contributing to the grandeur and stability of the structure. The interior of the church is composed of three naves, flanked by various altars, a projecting transept, and three chapels located in the apse area. Over time, the temple underwent internal adaptations, particularly after the Second Vatican Council, to adjust to new liturgical guidelines.
