The history of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Borba dates back to 1417, when it was established as the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit. In 1516, it assumed the status of Santa Casa da Misericórdia, following the Lisbon model.
- Construction date: Originally, the church was the Mother Church of Santa Maria do Castelo.
- Architectural highlights: Polinerved vaults, built during the reign of D. João III.
- Sacred art: Baroque altarpiece in gilded wood carving, created in 1731 by master carver Manuel de Mures.
- Historical organ: An organ dating from 1771, with a case painted with Chinese motifs, created by the painter José de Sousa de Carvalho.
- History of assistance: The hospital attached to the Church of Mercy provided assistance to the less fortunate in Borba for many centuries.
- Care during wars: During conflicts such as the War of the Spanish Succession (1700), the Peninsular War (1808), and the Civil War (1828/1834), the hospital also treated soldiers of various nationalities.
- Accommodation for pilgrims: In addition, the complex had houses to accommodate pilgrims and travelers on pilgrimage.
- Architectural styles: The church exhibits Mannerist, Baroque, and late-Baroque elements.
- Church structure: The Church of Mercy has a longitudinal plan with a nave and chancel, covered internally by ribbed vaults in two sections and a false barrel vault, respectively.
- Adjacent hospital: The hospital was developed next to the left side facade and the rear part, with a quadrangular central courtyard.
