District: Évora > Estremoz > Estremoz > Santo André

Location

This remarkable architectural complex is located in Estremoz, in the Santo André area, perfectly integrated into the city's urban fabric. It is situated in a small square, easily accessible from Rossio Marquês de Pombal, one of Estremoz's main urban landmarks. Its location allows for easy exploration of the surrounding urban area.

Historical and Architectural Memory

The Church and Convent of the Maltezas, also known as the Church of the Holy House of Mercy of Estremoz, are a testament to the city's historical and architectural evolution. Its origin dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries, a period when it began as an aristocratic manor house, with elements denoting the influence of the Manueline style. Later, it was transformed into a female monastery, housing nuns.

Throughout the 18th century, the complex underwent significant interventions, visible on the church's main facade, where the straight-lintel portal stands out, surmounted by a niche ornamented with fins and volutes, crowned by a cross, bearing the date of 1749. The rectangular-plan cloister features two floors. On the ground floor, semi-circular voussoir arches rest on elegant marble colonnettes, with acanthus capitals and well-crafted bases. The upper floor is characterized by lower-arched openings, reflecting different construction phases. Its wings, originally open, were adapted over time, and the remaining ones currently feature glazed frames. In 1881, the convent became the headquarters of the Holy House of Mercy of Estremoz, adapting its facilities to the new functions.

The Terracotta Nativity Scene

One of the most unique and interesting elements in this space is its 18th-century nativity scene, executed in the 18th century. This terracotta nativity scene is known for its unusual scenes, which stand out from traditional iconography. In addition to classic representations such as the Holy Family, the Adoration of the Shepherds, and the Procession of the Magi, the nativity scene includes the complete cycle of the Flight into Egypt, with moments such as the Rest During the Flight and the Return from Egypt. Interestingly, there is also a group of chestnut roasters, lending it a touch of everyday life and authenticity. Its decoration is complemented with paper flowers, a handcrafted detail that enhances its beauty.
