The Church of Senhor Jesus dos Passos, also popularly known as the Church of Calvary or of the Savior, is situated on an elevated point in Arraiolos, in the heart of the castle's walled enclosure. Its position, atop a hill at about 387 meters of altitude, gives it a singular prominence in the landscape. It rises slightly above the level of the walls, offering a wide perspective over the surroundings.
This religious building was constructed in the 16th century and, over time, has been known by different names, reflecting its functions and devotions. Initially, it served as a parish church, assuming a central role in the religious life of the community. The designations "Church of Senhor Jesus dos Passos", "Church of Calvary", and "Church of the Savior" coexist, each linked to aspects of its history and veneration.
The church features 16th and 17th-century religious architecture, with an elongated plan comprising a single nave, chancel, and side chapels. The gabled roof and buttresses on the side facades are distinctive elements of its construction. The main facade, facing west, stands out with its straight lintel portal, above which there is a grated window of similar design, culminating in a triangular pediment with decorative urns. A small walled churchyard precedes the main entrance.
On the south face, a bell tower stands out, housing a bronze bell. The simplicity and beauty of the building are enhanced by its whitewashed walls, a typical feature of Alentejo architecture, contrasting with the light blue that outlines the main openings and bases, giving it an appealing and traditional aesthetic.
Throughout its existence, the church has undergone several phases of transformation. In the 17th century, there was a significant reform of the chancel altarpiece. However, in the early 18th century, the building faced a period of abandonment and risk of ruin, leading to the transfer of the parish seat.
Fortunately, the first half of the 18th century brought new life to the church, with the construction of the bell tower and new altars, under the guidance of the Archbishop of Évora, Friar Miguel de Távora. Later, in 1754, it was integrated as a filial hermitage of the Parish of Santa Maria dos Mártires, and in 1874, the Brotherhood of Senhor dos Passos undertook a new and important reform, ensuring its preservation and religious function to this day.
