Located in the Moinho do Bispo area, in Montemor-o-Novo, the Church of São João Baptista do Castelo stands on an elevated point of the landscape. At approximately 300 meters of altitude and situated within the ancient walls, its privileged position offers a unique perspective over the town and the serene valley of the Almansor River.

Memory and History

This church, classified as a National Monument, is a testament to the passage of time in Montemor-o-Novo. Although currently in ruins and without active use, its history dates back centuries. Records indicate its existence as early as 1302, the year it was donated to the Chapter of the Cathedral. Formerly, it played a central role in the community, serving as the seat of the local parish.

Architectural Details

The structure of the Church of São João Baptista do Castelo, possibly dating back to the 14th century, reveals the Gothic architecture of the period. It features a rectangular plan, composed of a main nave and a square-shaped chancel. Inside, the nave is characterized by a barrel vault ceiling, while the chancel is distinguished by a dome, elements that invite observation of the building's original constructive features.
