The Church of São Bartolomeu do Outeiro stands in the small village of the same name, part of the union of parishes of São Bartolomeu do Outeiro and Oriola, in the municipality of Portel. This locality stands out for its elevated position, nestled in one of the highest points of the Serra de Portel, which gives it the status of a "viewpoint village". The church itself is built on a rocky and prominent hill, dominating the surrounding landscape. From its churchyard and front staircase, it is possible to appreciate a vast and admirable panoramic view over the Alentejo.
The history of the Church of São Bartolomeu do Outeiro has medieval roots, dating back to a primitive construction. However, the building currently observed is the result of a major remodeling carried out in the 16th century, after the year 1534, which gave it a new configuration. Subsequently, in the 18th century, the interior of the temple underwent a significant reformulation, adapting to the Baroque taste that marked the era. These interventions throughout the centuries shaped its architectural and artistic identity.
The church's structure reflects the different eras of its existence. The nave is covered by an elegant ribbed vault, while the chancel is crowned by a dome resting on pendentives. The 18th-century intervention, Baroque in character, enriched the interior with the addition of altars in gilded woodwork, lending it a more sumptuous atmosphere. Traces of mural painting that once adorned the chancel vault and parts of the side chapels are still visible, revealing the decorative richness of the period.
Inside the church, there is a notable image of its patron saint, Saint Bartholomew. This marble sculpture, dating from the late 15th century, is a piece of particular interest. The iconographic representation of the saint is singular, depicting him with the devil subdued. This work is not only a point of devotion but also a testament to sacred art and religious symbology from the transition to the Modern Age.
