The Church of Our Lady of Mileu is located in the Mileu area, in the locality of Veiros, a point of interest in the municipality of Estremoz. This temple is surrounded by a churchyard, a space with benches that invite rest, and an adjacent square, which over the centuries served as a meeting place for pilgrims and where festivities in honor of Our Lady of Mileu are still held today. Its position in this rural Alentejo setting gives it an atmosphere of tranquility and connection to local history.
This church boasts a history lost in time, being recognized as one of the oldest in the Veiros region. Although the exact date of its foundation remains uncertain, local oral tradition preserves legends linking it to the period of the Reconquista, suggesting a presence of faith dating back to remote times. Since 1609, the church's administration has been under the charge of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy), demonstrating its continuous importance in the community's life throughout the centuries.
The facade of the Church of Our Lady of Mileu, as we see it today, is the result of a profound structural renovation that occurred in 1778, significantly altering its original design. It features pilastered quoins that convey a sense of solidity, and a marble door and window, a material so characteristic of the region. The door is adorned with a neoclassical style lintel and cornice, while the pediment, with its scrolled shape and Marian invocation, still reveals traces of the Rococo period, creating an interesting fusion of styles.
One of the most fascinating and unique elements of this church is the presence of a plaque bearing a Roman funerary inscription. This epigraphic find, which includes the identification of a Roman citizen by his "tria nomina," filiation, and Papirian tribe (associated with citizens of Mérida, the ancient Emerita Augusta), dates back to the first half of the 1st century AD. The existence of this inscription, along with another Roman epigraph found in the same area, suggests the probable presence of a group of Mérida citizens who settled and contributed to the colonization of this Alentejo region, offering a glimpse into Roman life in Lusitanian lands.
