The Misericórdia Church of Vimieiro was founded in 1550 on the initiative of D. Francisco de Faro e Noronha, lord of the town. It replaced the old Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit and also managed the town's hospital.
The Misericórdia temple features a 16th-century vernacular style, with a single nave and a chancel of smaller dimensions and reinforced with buttresses. Its main facade has a straight-framed portal and is decorated with tiles representing the Mater Omnium, of Spanish origin.
Inside the church, there are tile panels executed in the 17th century that decorate the space. These tiles have a "corncob of speckles" pattern and acanthus borders.
The church's main altarpiece is a work of gilded and polychrome carving, with a structure of national influence, but Joanine decorative elements.
The church displays Misericórdia flags consisting of Mannerist canvases with scenes from the Passion of Christ, a Baroque Ecce Homo, and a Visitation, possibly from the original 16th-century church altarpiece.
Jacinto de Faria Barreto, a great benefactor of the church, instituted daily mass and was buried inside it.
The Misericórdia Church of Vimieiro is located in the town of Vimieiro, in the municipality of Arraiolos.
The church has a rich history and has played a significant role in the religious and social life of the region over the centuries.
