The Church of Consolation is located in Alandroal, a town in the heart of Alentejo. It stands specifically in the area of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, an area that invites exploration on foot, allowing visitors to feel the tranquil and characteristic atmosphere of the Alentejo village.
This religious building holds considerable historical value, having been founded in the year 1520. Its presence is an enduring testament to the history of Alandroal, preserving centuries of local memory and tradition.
One of the most distinctive and significant elements of the Church of Consolation is its sepulchral chapel, which houses the remains of Diogo Lopes de Sequeira. This historical figure was the 4th Governor-General of India, a notable explorer and navigator who unveiled the seas of Africa and the Orient. His prowess and relevance were perpetuated in literature, with Diogo Lopes de Sequeira being praised by Luís Vaz de Camões in The Lusiads (Canto X, stanza 52). In addition to his overseas achievements, he was also the chief magistrate (alcaide-mor) of the town of Alandroal, reinforcing his connection to this place.
