The headquarters of Grupo Pró-Évora is located at Rua do Salvador, number 1, an address found in the heart of Évora's historic centre. This area encompasses the former parishes of São Mamede, Sé, São Pedro, and Santo Antão, areas brimming with history. It is easily found by strolling through the typical streets that make up much of the city's heritage.
Founded on November 16, 1919, Grupo Pró-Évora is recognised as one of the oldest heritage defence groups in Portugal. Its creation was linked to important debates about the preservation of the city, establishing early on its purpose to safeguard Évora's historical and cultural assets.
Throughout its existence, Grupo Pró-Évora played a fundamental role in preserving Évora's identity. Its actions were decisive for the classification of several historic properties as National Monuments, including sections of the city walls, the Arco de D. Isabel, and the Portas da Lagoa and de Raimundo. Its intervention to prevent the destruction of the city walls was notable, promoting their conservation and subsequent classification in 1921. Furthermore, the group actively contributed to the process that led to Évora's Historic Centre being distinguished as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986.
The headquarters of Grupo Pró-Évora, located on Rua do Salvador, is not just an administrative venue. The building features spaces, such as the atrium and a courtyard, which are occasionally used for exhibitions and other cultural activities. These events allow visitors to engage with the association's work and with themes related to Évora's heritage.
An important part of Grupo Pró-Évora's legacy lies in its vast documentary collection, which includes a remarkable photographic archive. This archive contains visual records dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, documenting monumental and artistic aspects, events, and the daily life of the city and its municipality. It represents a valuable source for understanding the evolution and preservation of Évora's heritage over time.
