The Anta 3 Casas do Canal is located in a quiet rural area, integrated into the area known as Casas do Canal, near the locality of Glória, in the municipality of Estremoz. It is situated in an isolated setting, west of a national road, within a farm estate. This rural location allows visitors to feel the calm of the Alentejo landscape and appreciate the monument's natural setting.
This monument dates back to the Neo-Chalcolithic period, a distant era in our history that falls within Recent Prehistory. Its original function was to serve as a collective sepulchre, meaning a burial site for communities that inhabited this region thousands of years ago. Visiting the anta is to directly connect with traces of these early human societies in the territory.
The anta consists of an elongated polygonal burial chamber, constructed with large vertical stones called orthostats. Originally, the chamber would have had seven of these orthostats, six of which remain visible today, standing approximately 1.40 meters high. There is also a short corridor, although only one of its original orthostats remains standing. The monument was covered by a tumulus, an artificial mound of earth and stones, of which no significant traces remain. Interestingly, some additional stones were placed externally to reinforce the chamber's structure.
Currently, Anta 3 Casas do Canal is recognized as a historical-cultural landmark in the landscape. Its archaeological and heritage value led to the initiation of a procedure for its official classification, highlighting its importance for understanding local and regional prehistory. It is a site of continuous study and interest for those seeking to learn about the ancient roots of Alentejo and the monumentality of megalithic constructions.
