From Old Wash House to Art Canvas

This public wash house, which once played a central role in community life for laundry, has received a new interpretation. As part of a project that seeks to revitalize and give new meaning to these spaces in Montemor-o-Novo, the building has become the support for an artistic intervention.

The Urban Art Intervention

The artistic work seen today at the Lavadouro das Fazendas do Cortiço is by the artist couple Los Pepes. Their approach to the building is marked by the expressive use of color and the exploration of geometric forms, transforming the exterior and interior walls into a visually vibrant panel.

Message in Colors

Beyond aesthetics, Los Pepes' work at the wash house incorporates a reflection. The central theme relates to water, seeking to raise awareness about the importance of this resource, especially in a context like the Alentejo where its scarcity can be a reality. Through art, awareness about this relevant topic is encouraged.

Visual Elements and Symbolism

Upon approaching the wash house, visitors are greeted by a colorful exterior that invites a peek inside. Inside, a particular element catches the eye: a red heart, depicted in a friendly and smiling manner. This detail adds a touch of human warmth and symbolism to the space.
