The São João de Deus Fountain is located in the city of Estremoz, within the urban area of Quinta das Quintinhas. It is situated next to the building that was formerly the Royal Hospital of São João de Deus, now converted into the Sergeants' House of Cavalry Regiment 3. Its position gives it a discreet character, offering a point of historical interest in a quieter and more residential area of the locality.
This fountain stands out for its history of displacements. Its original construction dates back to the period between 1834 and 1836, having been initially installed in the old Rossio de São Brás, currently known as Jardim Municipal de Estremoz. However, in 1901, the fountain was transferred to its current location, next to the building of the Royal Hospital of São João de Deus, from which it inherited the name it bears today.
One of the most striking aspects of the São João de Deus Fountain is the quality of its stonework in marble. Its entire structure exhibits careful execution, where a markedly classicist style is recognized. Visitors can observe a delicate garland of flowers carved into the lower paneling, a detail that reflects the attention to detail of the era. In the central body of the fountain, the coat of arms of Estremoz also stands out, a symbolic element that links the work to the city's identity and history.
