The Couraça Towers are located in Estremoz, integrated into the town's historic area. They are situated in the upper part, within the area corresponding to the old castle and alcáçova, forming part of the remnants of the medieval wall that once protected the settlement.
This defensive element, known as a couraça, has roots in the military architecture brought by the Muslim civilization in the 12th century, and was later adopted and adapted by the Christian kingdoms.
Its main function was to ensure safe access to a source of potable water outside the walls, which was fundamental for the survival of those within the fortress during a prolonged siege.
In Estremoz, the Couraça Towers were part of a fortified corridor that connected the main wall to a water source. The walled structure that created this safe path, possibly built around the same time as the original Keep, was demolished in the late 17th century.
Today, only the towers that protected the outer end of this couraça remain visible, serving as a testament to the ingenious medieval military architecture and the strategic importance water held in times of conflict.
