The Santarém Gate is located in the town of Estremoz, in the urban area of Santo André. It represents one of the oldest access points to the medieval town, opening towards the historic Santiago Quarter. Its position allows for a clear observation of the old defensive line and the urban layout of yesteryear.
This gateway is an integral part of Estremoz's medieval wall, whose construction began in 1261 by order of King D. Afonso III. Over the years, it underwent improvements, particularly during the reign of his son, D. Dinis, which contributed to the town's defensive solidity. The Santarém Gate stands out as one of the two main entrances to the wall, oriented on opposite axes.
The imposing nature of the Santarém Gate is accentuated by its defensive architectural characteristics. It is flanked by two towers of distinct shapes: one with a cylindrical plan and the other quadrangular. This unique configuration suggests a particular need for protection at this point, indicating that it was once the most significant entrance to the medieval town, due to its greater defensive capability.
Upon approaching the Santarém Gate, visitors can observe details that tell stories. On one of its faces, there is a plaque dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, which reflects local tradition and faith. Near this, another inscription carved into the stone marks the completion date of the wall, in 1261, and mentions King D. Afonso III, who promoted its construction, leaving a direct testament to the city's history.
