The Statue in Homage to the Alentejo Woman is erected in the town of Portel, in the district of Évora. This work occupies a central place in a public space of the village, such as a garden or square, providing a setting that invites reflection and contemplation. Its presence is harmoniously integrated into the Alentejo landscape and the daily life of the local community.
This monument was conceived with the primary purpose of honoring the figure of the Alentejo woman. It is a tribute that highlights the strength, resilience, and truly vital role that women from Alentejo have played and continue to play in the culture, economy, and society of this unique region. Its inauguration, sometimes associated with symbolic dates such as International Women's Day, demonstrates the deep respect and importance attributed to the memory and legacy of these women, considered a fundamental pillar of Alentejo identity.
By the Alentejo sculptor Rogério Ribeiro, this work is a structure of remarkable conception, approximately five meters in height. It is composed of three tile panels, a traditional technique of Portuguese art, on which a vast number of female faces are depicted, a total of 375 faces. These figures symbolize the collectivity, diversity, and richness of the experiences lived by women in Alentejo.
Among the multiplicity of these representations, the face of Catarina Eufémia stands out, an iconic figure of resistance and the struggle for freedom and emancipation. Her inclusion in the monument gives it additional symbolism, evoking the persistence in the pursuit of dignity and rights, and perpetuating the memory of the history and values that have shaped the Alentejo woman over time.
