Erected in Sítio das Hortas, on the outskirts of Évora Monte (municipality of Estremoz), the hermitage is situated in a wide open valley, where cork oaks and olive groves predominate. Its slightly elevated position offers a serene perspective over the Alentejo landscape.
Access is via rural paths that cross extensive fields, lending the journey a character of tranquility and direct contact with the surrounding nature.
The oldest part of the hermitage is the chancel, with architectural features typical of the 16th century. The simple openings and contained volume suggest a foundation linked to the religious needs of a community dispersed across the countryside.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, external spaces were added, perhaps to accommodate pilgrims and free markets, a practice attested until 1932. Until the early years of the 20th century, the feast of Saint Mark was celebrated here on April 25th.
The building features a single nave covered with ceramic tiles and a small balcony with a depressed arch above the main door. The whitewashed walls show cracks and humidity stains, reflecting the precarious state of conservation.
Around, the scent of flourishing rosemary contrasts with the silence of the olive groves, recreating the atmosphere of ancient pilgrimages. The space invites contemplation, even with the image of Saint Mark currently kept in another local church.
