In the heart of the village of Mourão, at the intersection of Rua Benquerer and Rua José Joaquim Vasconcelos Gusmão.
Erected during the time of King D. José I, with a license dated January 26, 1776, it is one of the oldest chapels in the village.
Small white chapel with a schist portal (a typical stone of the region), which contrasts with the white of the walls.
A monochromatic tile panel dedicated to the souls in purgatory stands out, located near the entrance.
Between 1976 and 1984, it served as the headquarters for the local philharmonic band.
In 1984, it was adapted to function as a funeral chapel, with interior alterations, including the removal of the pulpit and the construction of a flat ceiling.
The village of Mourão is rich in religious traditions, with several chapels, churches, and devotion niches, known as “Steps of the Lord”. These niches are decorated with flowers and small paintings alluding to Holy Week and the procession of the Lord of the Steps.
The tile panels of the niches were enriched by the artist from Mourão, António Palmira, keeping the region's artistic and cultural tradition alive.
The chapel is located next to residential houses, making it a discreet but important element of Mourão's urban landscape.
A stop that allows visitors to feel the traditional atmosphere of the village, discover local art in the tiles, and understand the importance of faith in the community's history.
