The Redondo Ecomuseum is located in the northeastern part of the municipality of Redondo, extending over a vast area of approximately 6000 hectares. Its location is near the village of Freixo and covers a significant portion of the Serra d’Ossa, an Alentejo territory with remarkable natural and landscape richness. This area has been, over centuries, a place of habitation and resource exploitation for various communities.
The vastness of the Ecomuseum allows for immersion in an environment that harmoniously integrates the natural landscape with the vestiges of human presence, offering direct contact with the heritage of the Redondo territory.
The Redondo Ecomuseum is conceived as a dynamic and active space that invites direct exploration of the region's archaeological and environmental heritage. It acts as a mirror reflecting the long history of the territory and the continuous human interaction with it, from ancient times to the present day. More than a static exhibition, this ecomuseum proposes an experience that fosters living and the exchange of knowledge, presenting itself as a true laboratory of discoveries and emotions.
At the heart of this vast ecomuseum, the former São Bento do Zambujal School serves as its main support point. This historic building, which once served the community as a place of education, has been adapted to host various cultural activities. Its space, encompassing both the old outdoor playground and the interior classrooms, offers a conducive environment for initiatives that complement the outdoor exploration of the ecomuseum, serving as a link between the building's educational past and its current cultural function.
The Redondo Ecomuseum focuses on the promotion and preservation of the municipality's identity, with emphasis on the areas of environment, archaeology, and culture. Its vocation is to enable the recognition of historical and natural features, such as local biodiversity and the archaeological legacy present in the landscape. The space stimulates an active form of knowledge, inviting attentive observation of the environment, from celestial phenomena like star gazing, to the richness of wildlife and the marks left by past civilizations in the territory.
