Category: Archaeology > Cromlech

District: Évora > Évora > Valeira > Vale de Maria do Meio

Location

Situated in the rural surroundings of Herdade de Vale de Maria do Meio, in the municipality of Évora, this cromlech stands isolated in the Alentejo landscape. Near the locality of Valeira, its position offers an environment of great tranquility and direct contact with the region's characteristic nature, marked by cork oaks and holm oaks. It is a place that invites serenity and contemplation, far from the hustle and bustle.

Origin and Ancestral Layout

This remarkable monument dates back to the megalithic era, its construction probably occurring between 6000 and 5000 BC, during the Neolithic period in the Alentejo interior. The cromlech is composed of a set of 34 menhirs, rocks of varying dimensions, arranged in an elongated plan that stretches from West to East. Some of the most imposing menhirs reach about two meters in height, marking the highest point of the small elevation where the complex is located.

Mysteries Engraved in the Stones

Some of the menhirs that make up this cromlech bear ancestral engravings, revealing signs such as the crook, quadrilateral shapes, and the moon. These symbols suggest a deep connection with the beliefs and rituals of prehistoric communities. It is believed that the cromlech underwent two constructive phases, with the most recent possibly aligned with lunar phases, indicating an important religious or astronomical function for these ancient peoples.

A Recognized Legacy

Identified by archaeologist Manuel Calado in 1993, this cromlech was classified as a National Monument in 2013, a recognition of its unquestionable importance in the landscape of Portuguese heritage. Currently, the site serves a cultural and recreational function, inviting contemplation of this historical-cultural landmark. Its preservation and study continue to be a focus of attention, allowing future generations to also engage with this fascinating megalithic legacy.
