The Castro do Monte da Ponte is located in the village of São Brás do Regedouro, in the municipality of Évora, in the heart of Alentejo. This historic site rises on a small hill, giving it a naturally elevated position. From here, one's gaze reaches a wide and unobstructed view over the surrounding rural landscape, which mirrors the characteristic tranquility of the Alentejo region.
This archaeological site is a testament to human presence in remote times, with a history spanning thousands of years. The Castro do Monte da Ponte was a fortified settlement, initially established during the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Its foundation in this strategic location demonstrates the need for defense and territorial control by ancient communities. Later, the 'castro' was reoccupied during the Roman period, which underscores its continuous importance as a point of reference and occupation throughout different eras.
The most distinctive element of the Castro do Monte da Ponte is its robust defensive wall. This structure, which outlines an oval perimeter, was built with large stone blocks, using an ancestral technique known as "dry stone" masonry, without any type of mortar. The ingenuity and effort of the communities that erected it are evident in this construction. Although time and natural elements have left their marks, it is still possible to observe the impressive contours of this ancient fortification and detect some vestiges of structures that once existed within it, allowing one to imagine the daily life that unfolded there.
