The Interactive House Museum of Borba is located in the heart of Borba village, in the area known as Matriz. This central area gives it a direct insertion into the traditional urban fabric of the locality, allowing visitors an authentic perception of the Borbense way of life.
This space, which dates back to the 19th century, has a rich family history that began in 1937, when Esmeralda and Mariano chose it as their home after their marriage. Originally, the house was bequeathed to Mariano by his uncle and godfather, José Manuel da Silva, in 1936. For decades, this building housed both the living area, located on the upper floor, and an active cellar on the ground floor, demonstrating the fusion between domestic life and traditional wine production.
On the ground floor of the house, a remarkable cellar is discovered, with 46 original clay talhas, which are the heart of this space. In addition to these large amphorae, essential for wine production, there is also a vinegar cellar, a sunny patio, the old stables, and a well. Until 1957, this cellar produced wine, vinegar, and brandy, being a living testament to an ancestral practice of talha winemaking, which Alentejo has maintained since Roman times.
The Interactive House Museum of Borba invites visitors to an immersive journey, which seeks to give a new future to a past with history. Through multimedia resources, the experience is enriched, allowing one to feel and imagine the aromas, dialogues, and daily work that filled this cellar. The use of technology transforms a mobile phone or tablet into a window to an ancient reality, which reinvents itself and comes to life in this space that was, and continues to be, a cellar with soul.
