Cante Alentejano, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is a collective musical manifestation that portrays the soul and history of the region. Originally sung by rural men in groups, its "modas" (tunes) narrate the daily life, experiences, and resilience of the people of Alentejo, especially those connected to agricultural work. It is a form of artistic expression that remains alive and is transmitted through generations, maintaining its essence and profound cultural significance.
Casa do Cante was conceived with the central purpose of promoting, enhancing, and deepening the study of Cante Alentejano. This space emerged from the rehabilitation and adaptation of the old Telheiro Primary School, giving new life and new meaning to a building with history in the local community. The House functions as the social headquarters of the Cultural and Sports Group of the Parish of Monsaraz, serving as a meeting and rehearsal point for the Parish of Monsaraz Coral Group.
Inside, Casa do Cante integrates a space with museological characteristics and an interpretive area, allowing visitors detailed contact with the history and evolution of this unique musical expression. It is a place where the memory of Cante is preserved and celebrated.
At this location, it is possible to have an immersive experience in the richness of Cante Alentejano. Visitors can explore the history of this cultural manifestation in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz and, on certain occasions, attend rehearsals of the resident coral group. This proximity offers a unique opportunity to witness the persistence and vitality of a musical tradition that continues to be a pillar of Alentejo identity, remaining a living and vibrant element of local culture.
