This church is located in the town of Cabeção, part of the municipality of Mora. It is situated in the area known as Bairro Doutor João Lopes Aleixo. Its central position makes it a landmark in the town's urban fabric, easily identifiable for anyone walking through its streets.
The history of this church dates back to ancient times. Documents indicate its existence as early as the 13th century, around 1279. Initially, its foundation is thought to have been linked to a property donated to D. Constança, daughter of King D. Dinis. Over the centuries, the temple had different patron saints, transitioning from Saint Mary and Our Lady of the Conception, until reaching its current dedication to Our Lady of Purification, the name by which the town's main church is known today.
The church we see today does not entirely correspond to the original temple or even to intermediate reconstructions, such as the one that existed in the 16th century. Various remodelling efforts throughout the centuries altered its appearance, removing many of its oldest features. The architectural marks that stand out most today largely date back to the late 17th century.
The great earthquake of 1755 caused considerable damage to the structure, leading to the disappearance of many earlier elements that characterized it. Its current form also resulted from structural arrangements carried out more recently, in the 1950s, which gave it its present appearance.
Inside the church, one of the most interesting and devotional elements is the Chapel of the Senhor dos Passos. This chapel holds special significance for the people of Cabeção, being a place of deep faith. Its construction dates back approximately to the time of Queen D. Maria I, placing it in the late 18th century.
It is notable for its complete covering in gilded woodwork, an impressive artistic work that covers the lining and the ceiling. The ceiling is a round vault, and the overall style presents a harmonious transition between Rococo and Neoclassical, reflecting the artistic tastes of the era in which it was created.
